Photographs taken in the communal areas of hotels across America by actress Diane Keaton.

Keaton focuses on liminal spaces - lobbies and seating areas - and on their decorations and furnishings rather than on other guests, or the bedrooms they temporarily reserve for themselves. The ‘reservations’ of the book’s title, then, perhaps refer more to the negotiation of boundaries between persons and things (to have reservations also being a state of uncertainty about how much to give and take from a given interaction); full of tenderness and loneliness, the book touches gently on the sympathies and intimacies that can arise in spaces of weakened attachment.

Softcover, first edition. 1980.
