One of the most remarkable books we have managed to get our hands on. It’s going to be a difficult one to let go of.

Published in 1981, this book documents the shores, lands and lives of Japanese pearl divers living in Shima. Ama is a Japanese tradition that is thought to have been practiced for 2000 years. The women dive without scuba gear and air tanks so hold their breath under water for very long periods of time hunting for pearls. The black & white photographs show the preparation and process involved.

Hardback with case. 164 pages. In very good condition, slight scuff on the back of cardboard case but the book itself is in excellent condition. 21.6cm x 31cm.
